Case Study: Minimising Production Downtime Using 3D Scanning

Silver production line with various tools and sensors performing operations as parts pass along a conveyor belt

The Problem

Our customer needed to modify an existing production line to integrate new machinery between a sorter unit and the main assembly unit. This line produced over a thousand pieces of medical equipment per hour, with minimal allowance for downtime. Adding to the complexity, the machinery was located inside a Class 7 cleanroom. Due to the stringent cleanroom protocols, frequent access to take manual measurements during the design process was impractical. They needed a precise 3D model to ensure a right-first-time design.

The Solution

We used our hand-held 3D scanner to capture the external surfaces of the machine and its immediate surroundings, creating STL mesh models, all without halting production. For the internal components, a brief production pause was necessary, and we were allocated a 60-minute window to complete the scan. We completed the internal scanning in just 8 minutes, and the machine was back in production with under 10 minutes of total downtime—well within the time allowed.

The Result

The 3D scanning produced a detailed and accurate model of the existing production line. With this, our customer was able to confidently design the new system with complete accuracy. The final outcome was the successful delivery of a right first-time solution with minimal production downtime.

Conclusion

This case study highlights the advantages of 3D scanning technology in industrial design applications. By enabling rapid and precise data capture with minimal disruption to operations, 3D scanning facilitates efficient design, planning, and modifications. Whether for new installations or retrofits in complex environments, it reduces downtime, making it an invaluable tool for industries where time and precision are critical.
